Seven people, including two police officers, have died in a crash on the A66 near Southbank. The crash, between a marked police car and a Volkswagen Passat occured at 3:39am on Saturday morning.
The Passat was travelling in the wrong direction when it collided with the police car, which was travelling in the correct direction accoring to police. The car was a marked armed response vehicle.
All seven occupants, two police officers and five members of the public, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The police officers have now been named as PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough. The both died at the scene.
The road is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.
Chief Constable Victoria Fuller of Cleveland Police said:
"First and foremost, our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved in today's incident.
"No one should leave their home and not return safely, including police officers serving their communities and protecting the people of Cleveland.
"This tragic incident will be felt across Cleveland, within our communities and throughout the entire policing family."
Cleveland Police said an investigation is under way and that all families are being offered specialist support.
The North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance Service and Cleveland Fire were also at the scene.
Anna Turley, MP for Redcar and Cleveland, said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of the fatal collision on the A66 this morning.
"My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, and with everyone affected by this terrible incident.
In an emotional press conference, Cleveland Police's Chief Constable, Victoria Fuller said
"This is an incredibly sad day for Cleveland...These were brave officers, protecting our communities and serving our residents who didnt return home to their families at the end of their shift. My thoughts, and the thoughts of everybody here at Cleveland Police, are with their familes, friends, collegaues and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time."
"Earlier today the Deputy Chief Constable and I visited Matthew and Toms families to offer our condolences, support one another, and begin to come to terms with this unimaginbable loss. Formal identification has now taken place for occupants of the Volkswagen Passat, and specalist family liason officers are being deployed to support the bereaved families. We also have support in palce for our officers and staff who have been effected by todays tragic events."
"As in mandatory involving any death concerning a police officer, we have reffered the matter to the office for police conduct and are fully cooperating with their investiagtion."
"Whilst this investigation is ongoing, and out of respect for all those who have lost loved ones, I would strongly urge people to avoid speculation and respect privacy of the families."
