Durham Markets Calls on Community to Create Poppy Tribute for Remembrance Day

Durham Markets is calling on knitters, crocheters, craft groups and community organisations across the region to take part in a major community project to mark Remembrance Day 2026. The ambitious initiative aims to create 12,600 handmade poppies – one for every soldier of the Durham Light Infantry who lost their lives during the World Wars.

The finished poppies will form two large-scale canopy installations, suspended from the
entrance ramps inside Durham Market Hall, creating a striking visual tribute to honour those who
made the ultimate sacrifice.

The project invites contributions from individuals of all skill levels, from experienced crafters to
complete beginners. Templates for poppy designs will be made available, although contributors
are also encouraged to create their own interpretations.

Louisa McLean, owner of The House of Eden in Durham Market Hall and coordinator of the
project, said:

“This is about bringing our community together to create something truly meaningful. Each poppy
represents a life lost, and together they will form a powerful and moving tribute that reflects both
remembrance and unity.”

Completed poppies must be submitted by Friday, 16th October, allowing time for them to be
assembled onto military camouflage netting ahead of the Remembrance Day display.

Poppies can be dropped off at The House of Eden, located inside Durham Market Hall, or posted
to:

The House of Eden
Durham Market Hall
Market Place
Durham
DH1 3NJ

Participants submitting multiple poppies are asked to include a note indicating how many have
been provided to assist organisers.

For more information or to get involved, contact Durham Markets via email at
marketing@durhammarkets.co.uk or via their social media channels.

This installation is expected to become a powerful focal point within the city’s Remembrance
commemorations, highlighting both the scale of sacrifice made by the Durham Light Infantry and
the strength of community spirit in Durham today.
