Six Miles of Timber and Rising Fast: Landmark Lost Feather Arena Takes Shape at Kynren

Momentum is rapidly building on site at Kynren – The Storied Lands, as construction of the spectacular Lost Feather arena reaches a major new milestone ahead of its opening this July.

At the heart of the development is the arena’s defining centrepiece: a colossal sculptural bird’s nest whose statistics reveal the sheer ambition of the build.

More than 2,250 individual timber lengths, each measuring four metres, are being used to create the structure – equating to over 9,000 metres (six miles) of timber that will be carefully woven into place to form the vast nest.

The current phase of construction involves the intricate process of shaping and layering the timber, transforming raw materials into one of the most visually striking performance spaces ever created for a UK attraction.

When complete, the 2,500-seat arena will host The Lost Feather – a UK-first live action spectacle combining emotional storytelling with a free-flying bird experience on an unprecedented scale.

Set within a sweeping landscape of water, hillside staging and immersive design, the production will feature more than 250 birds in free flight, creating a powerful and emotionally resonant experience that blends performance with conservation.

“The scale of what is now taking shape is extraordinary,” said Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren.

“When you begin to understand the materials involved – quite literally miles of timber – you start to see the ambition behind The Lost Feather.

“This is not just an arena; it is a landmark structure that will define this new chapter for Kynren. There is a real sense of momentum on site now, and it is incredibly exciting to see it coming to life ahead of July.”

Designed to feel both organic and permanent, the nest structure reflects the wider creative vision of The Storied Lands – an experience rooted in nature, heritage and storytelling.

The Lost Feather is being developed in collaboration with leading avian specialists, ensuring the production is grounded in the highest standards of conservation and education.

The experience will form part of a wider programme designed to deepen public understanding of bird species and their protection.

As part of Phase One of Kynren – The Storied Lands, the arena will sit alongside a series of major new live-action experiences, positioning Bishop Auckland as a significant new destination for cultural tourism in the UK.

With opening day on 18 July fast approaching, organisers say progress on The Lost Feather signals a defining moment in the delivery of the new park – and the arrival of what is set to become one of its most iconic and talked-about attractions.
