A Durham charity which has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local good causes over the past 50 years is set for a relaunch.
Durham Lions Club is holding an Open Evening on Monday 28 September to attract new members, so it can continue to serve the community. It may be forced to close, if it cannot recruit new members.
Lions Club members fundraise for local, regional and international charities. Most recently the club has supported St Cuthbert's Hospice, Willow Burn Hospice, North East Air Ambulance Service, Learning for Life and Northumbria Blood Bikes.
Members also volunteer their time helping the community, by organising litter picks, collecting and recycling unwanted glasses for reuse in the developing world, volunteering at food banks, and running schemes supporting local young people, in addition to many other fundraising and service activities.
Durham Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organisation. Founded in the USA in 1917, and now present in more than 208 countries and geographic areas, Lions Clubs bring together women and men from the age of 18 to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding.
“Unfortunately old age and ill health has caught up with the members of Durham Lions Club, so we are relaunching the club. Durham Lions has been extremely successful over the past 50 years and there is no reason why it cannot continue to be successful.
“We would like to invite anyone who lives, works or studies in Durham, or in the surrounding towns and villages, and who is interested in helping their local community to come to our Open Evening. They can meet our Lions and find out what we do. Everyone is welcome,” said Jackie Robson, Acting President of Durham Lions.
Durham Lions Open Evening is at Alington House, 4 North Bailey, Durham, DH1 3ET, starting at 7pm on Monday 28 September.
