Durham classic car show returns this bank holiday Monday

More than 100 remarkable vehicles will take their places against the historic backdrop of Durham city centre when the Durham Classic Car Show returns on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August.

Taking place from 11am until 4pm, the free event will transform some of the city’s most recognisable locations into an open-air celebration of motoring history.

Classic cars from Britain and overseas will be displayed throughout Durham Market Place, Palace Green, Framwellgate Bridge, and Elvet Bridge, giving visitors the opportunity to admire a huge variety of vehicles while exploring the historic heart of the city.

From beautifully preserved vintage models and elegant luxury vehicles to sports cars, retro favourites and much-loved cars from decades ago, the event promises something for motoring enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

The setting is a particularly special part of the show. Cars representing different eras of motoring will stand among Durham’s centuries-old buildings, cobbled streets and bridges, with vehicles displayed close to landmarks including Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle, St Nicholas’ Church and Durham Market Hall.

Visitors will be able to take a closer look at the cars, photograph their favourites and meet many of the dedicated owners responsible for preserving and maintaining them.

James Wilson, Market Manager at Durham Markets, said: “The Durham Classic Car Show is always a wonderful day for the city. Seeing so many beautifully maintained vehicles displayed against Durham’s historic architecture creates a spectacle that is quite unlike any other car show.

“The event brings together generations of motoring history, and every vehicle has its own story. Visitors can admire the cars, speak to their owners and enjoy exploring different parts of our city centre along the way.

“You certainly don’t need to be a motoring expert to enjoy the show. For many people, seeing a particular make or model brings back treasured memories, while younger visitors have the chance to discover cars they may never have encountered before. It is a free and welcoming day out for the whole family.”

With displays stretching across several city-centre locations, visitors are encouraged to explore the full event route and enjoy Durham’s independent shops, hospitality businesses and historic attractions during their visit.

The Durham Classic Car Show takes place from 11am until 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st
August 2026. Admission is free.
