Emergency services are responding to an incident in Sunderland after a vehicle entered the River Wear near the Wearmouth Bridge.
Northumbria Police stated that notification of the vehicle entering the water was received shortly before 1:30 PM on Tuesday, September 29. Authorities have requested that the public stay away from the area while operations continue.
Multiple agencies are deployed at the scene, including:
Police: Northumbria Police personnel are managing the perimeter and coordinating with partner agencies.
Coastguard and Air Support: HM Coastguard dispatched rescue teams from Sunderland and Seaham at approximately 1:25 PM, alongside a search and rescue helicopter.
Lifeboats: RNLI lifeboats from both Sunderland and Cullercoats are actively searching the river.
Ambulance Service: The North East Ambulance Service deployed an emergency ambulance, a clinical team leader, three officers, an air ambulance, and its full Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) following a call at 1:23 PM.
Fire Service: Fire engines are also present at the riverbank.
Operations remain ongoing along both the water and the riverbank. Witnesses report a large-scale presence of emergency vehicles in the vicinity of the Wearmouth Bridge. Updates will be provided as official information becomes available.
