BBC Concert Orchestra Records Original Soundtrack for Kynren

Kynren – The Storied Lands has joined forces with the world-renowned BBC Concert Orchestra to record original music for two major new shows opening this summer at the UK’s first live-action show park in County Durham.

The specially commissioned scores, which have been written for The Lost Feather and Legend of the Wear by composers Samuel Pegg and Martin Batchelar after briefing from Kynren creative team, were recorded at London’s iconic Maida Vale Studios.

The recordings are among the final sessions ever held there as the legendary studios have been sold to a consortium headed by Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

The collaboration brings together internationally acclaimed conductors, composers and orchestral musicians to create cinematic new soundtracks designed specifically for the large-scale live experiences at Kynren – The Storied Lands.

The recordings were performed by members of the BBC Concert Orchestra under the baton of Jérôme Kuhn, newly appointed Associate Conductor, and co-written with composers Samuel Pegg and Martin Batchelar, whose work spans film, television, theatre and major international productions.

Additional soloists and specialist musicians will also feature within the productions, including performers using historical instruments to help create an authentic musical backdrop inspired by myth, folklore and the natural world.

The Lost Feather will see more than 250 birds take to the skies in an awe-inspiring celebration of flight, conservation and humanity’s connection with the natural world, while Legend of the Wear transforms a vast lake into the setting for dramatic water stunts and a powerful retelling of the Lambton Worm myth.

Audiences watching Legend of the Wear will also hear references to the legendary North East folk ballad The Lambton Worm woven into the score, alongside specially created water-based sound effects designed to immerse audiences in the atmosphere of the production.

Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren, said: “From the very beginning, we wanted the music for Kynren – The Storied Lands to feel every bit as ambitious and world-class as the shows themselves.

“These are entirely original compositions, created specifically for our productions and recorded by one of the world’s most respected orchestras.

“The music plays a huge role in transporting audiences emotionally into these stories, whether that’s the soaring spectacle of The Lost Feather or the elemental drama of Legend of the Wear.

“To be able to record at the legendary Maida Vale Studios during one of its final sessions makes this even more special,” she added.

Conductor Jérôme Kuhn said the productions possessed “a remarkable scale and imagination”, with music designed to match the ambition, mythology and emotional depth of the live shows.

“The scores move between mythology, drama and moments of intimacy, while also drawing on folk traditions and unusual textures to create something distinctive for audiences,” he said.

“Recording this music with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Maida Vale was an extraordinary experience and a fitting way to celebrate such an iconic studio,” he added.

Composers Pegg & Batchelar said the most exciting part of the project was making the music feel like a living, breathing part of the live experience.

“From the scale of the orchestral writing to the more detailed historical and natural sounds woven throughout the productions, it places the audience in the heart of the story.

“We wrote the scores not only to accompany the action on stage, but to enhance the atmosphere, emotion and sense of immersion for audiences throughout each performance.”

Kynren – The Storied Lands opens this summer in County Durham, featuring five large-scale live shows and immersive experiences inspired by history, myth and legend.
