Alex Sweeney

Meet Alex
In The Soul Cellar you'll hear Classic Soul, Funk, Jazz Funk, Motown, The Sound of Philadelphia and Northern Soul. Every week we featured a special artist - in the past we've had Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, to Alisha Keys and Gregory Porter and everything in-between.
My 70's show is exactly what it says on the tin. One hour of some of the greatest tune from that amazing decade of music. From ABBA to David Bowie, Slade to The Eagles and all the big ,big hits that you may remember first time around or you are visiting for the first time.
How did you end up on the radio?
What brought me to radio was I left School at 15 and luckily became a full-time DJ in pubs and clubs straight away and when the 3rd Commercial radio station in Scotland opened, Radio Tay, I was lucky enough to spend nearly 3 years there presenting The Breakfast Show and every daily show on the station as well as launching a Soul Show which was an earlier version of The Soul Cellar.
After a hiatus of many years I returned to radio with Durham OnAir - My first show was on the stations launch day on November 5th 2020.
What are your top 3 songs of all time?
Luther Vandross, Never to much.
Sam Cooke, A change is gonna come.
Etta James, At last.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
My ideal weekend is starting Saturday and Sunday with a 5k run, chill with my partner going out for meal and drinks and if she is working I'm glued to the TV watching Football, Football and more Football with the Pizza Menu close by.
Hear Alex Thursdays from 9pm, Saturday's from 9am and Sundays from 12 Noon!
