Residents across County Durham are being urged to stand together in the fight against domestic abuse ahead of Friday’s White Ribbon Day.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women marks the start of a 16-day campaign, raising awareness of domestic abuse and other forms of gender-based violence.
Durham County Council, which has recently gained the prestigious White Ribbon
Accreditation for its commitment as an employer to promoting gender equality and offering
a range of support to staff affected by abuse, is asking people to support the campaign.
Officers will be in Durham Market Place on Friday 25 November, between 10am and 2pm,
taking part in a series of football-based activities, in line with this year’s White Ribbon
theme of #TheGoal, which coincides with the FIFA World Cup.
They will be encouraging everyone, especially men and boys, to sign the White Ribbon
pledge and promise never to use, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
Staff from Harbour, the council’s commissioned domestic abuse service, will be joining
officers to share information on the support available to anyone affected by domestic
abuse.
Cllr Alan Shield, the council’s Cabinet member for equality and inclusion, said: “As a
council we recognise that anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, including men. That’s
why we commission services for everyone who may be affected. However, to mark this
World Cup White Ribbon Day, there has never been a better time for us to come together
to end violence against women and girls. Let’s blow the whistle on abuse.
“All men can share our goal to end violence and domestic abuse. If you have, or think you
might hurt someone, or you are suffering from domestic abuse, please reach out and get
confidential help. Whether you’re a football fan or not, I would encourage everyone to
stand with us this year. By working together, we can achieve gender equality and help to
make sure everyone feels safe and protected.”
