Durham Cathedral to host General Elections Hustings


Durham Cathedral will host a hustings for the upcoming General Election on Wednesday 26 June at 7.30pm. All parties and independent candidates standing in the City of Durham constituency have been invited to participate.


The event is being hosted by the Durham Cathedral Institute and Durham Churches Together. It will be chaired by the Dean of Durham, Philip Plyming.


Already confirmed for the event are Labour candidate Mary Foy, Conservative candidate Luke Holmes and Liberal Democratic candidate Mark Wilkes.


The Very Reverend Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham Says,


“We’re delighted to be hosting this important local event in partnership with Durham Churches Together. Thanks to the Durham Cathedral Institute, Durham Cathedral already has a reputation for encouraging debate and addressing topics with particular significance for the people and communities of the North East. This event sees this sacred space as a platform for democratic engagement and is a chance for local communities to hear from their candidates and to ask questions on areas that will affect the future of the constituency.”


People will be able to submit their questions to candidates on the evening either online or in paper form. The event is open to all and is free of charge, with no booking required. Seating will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

“We're anticipating an evening where people will be keen for their voices to be heard. We encourage people from all across the community to attend and participate in this hustings to make it a lively and respectful debate.”
