Durham After Dark

Midnight - 4:00am

Whats on in County Durham this weekend? Aug 15th

Every week we work with Visit County Durham to discover what you can explore from your door. We collected the best walks, rides and attractions, as well as a selection of fantastic events that are happening over this weekend.

Walk:  Castle to Egglestone Abbey via Abbey Bridge
Leaving from Scar Top down the footpath by the castle wall, you will cross the river by The
Green Bridge, and from the south side will get panoramic views of the river and modern
apartments converted from former mills. The walk will then lead you through the caravan
site, across fields, down the lane past Egglestone Abbey and over Abbey Bridge. You will
then return on the north side of the river, through woods and across fields.

Ride: Easington Colliery to Haswell Cycle Route

A 4-mile linear cycle route from Easington Colliery to Haswell. Start from Station Road in
Easington Colliery by Horden Dene. This route heads into Easington on the B1283 where
street scenes for ‘Billy Elliot’ were filmed. https://www.thisisdurham.com/inspire-

Beauty Spot: Waldridge Fell (cycling not permitted)

There is no need to travel to the North Pennine hills to enjoy moorland. Waldridge Fell is an
unusual landscape to find so close to an urban area but with its mix of rare lowland heath
supporting heather and bilberry it makes for a particularly delightful scene when the heather
blooms in mid to late summer and a purple haze spreads across the hill.

Attraction/Picnic Spot: Durham University Botanic Garden

Don't miss all that the Botanic Garden has to offer with attractions that appeal to young and
old alike. The views change throughout the year with vibrant poppy and cornflower displays
in the summer to rich warm colours in the autumn, all this in 18 acres of parkland, just
minutes from Durham city centre. https://www.thisisdurham.com/things-to-do/durham-
