A man has sadly died after collapsing at Durham Market Hall. The incident happened on the afternoon of Saturday 13th December.
A statement was released on the Facebook page of Durham Markets at around 4pm on Saturday afternoon:
"Today, we experienced a very sad incident in our Market Hall.
A gentleman sadly collapsed, and despite the best efforts of everyone involved, he could not be revived. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of the public who stepped forward without hesitation to help. Customers worked alongside the Durham Markets team, taking turns to perform CPR while waiting for the emergency services to arrive, while others did everything they could to offer dignity and privacy during an extremely distressing situation.
James, our Market Manager, was unable to take the names of everyone who helped him, but he would like to sincerely thank each and every person who assisted in any way. Your kindness, bravery and compassion did not go unnoticed, and truly reflected the very best of our community.
Thank you to everyone who showed such care and humanity today."
The sad news garnered a large response across social media, with comments from witnesess at the scene.
A comment from stall holder Durham Vintage read:
"Massive respect to the market staff today. The way you all stepped up and supported each other in such a tough moment says everything about the kind of people you are. RIP to the poor person. extremely sad. Thinking of there friends and family."
Mary Kelly Foy, MP for City of Durham said
"What tragic news, I’m sending heartfelt condolences to the gentleman’s loved ones. May he RIP. I’m not surprised to read about the valiant efforts from the brilliant market team and general public in Durham, huge respect to you all for your care and compassion."
