Durham Markets has launched a new photography competition as part of its celebrations marking 175 years since the formation of Durham Markets Company in 1851.
Titled ‘The Spirit of Durham Markets’, the competition invites people of all ages to capture
what the Markets mean to them; from traders and customers to hidden details, everyday
moments, and the unique atmosphere of both the Indoor Market Hall and the Outdoor
Market in Durham Market Place.
The competition forms part of a year-long programme of events, activities and community
projects celebrating the markets’ long-standing role at the heart of Durham life.
Entries are open in three categories: Under 13, Under 18, and Adult (18+), and
photographers of all experience levels are welcome to take part. Images can be taken using
cameras, mobile phones, or drones (in line with UK regulations), encouraging a wide range
of creative interpretations of the theme.
A total prize fund of £500 will be awarded in the form of Durham Markets gift vouchers,
redeemable with traders across the Indoor and Outdoor Markets, keeping investment firmly
within the local market community. Winning images will also be displayed permanently
within the Market Hall as part of a lasting anniversary legacy.
James Wilson, Market Manager at Durham Markets, said:
“Durham Market Hall has been part of everyday life in the city for 175 years, and this
competition is about celebrating the people, stories, and moments that have shaped it over
that time. We want to see the Market through the eyes of the community, whether that’s
traders at work, customers browsing, or the small details that make the place so special.
We’re especially keen for local schools and colleges to get involved, so younger
generations can play a part in marking this important milestone.”
Durham Markets is encouraging local schools, sixth forms, and colleges to take part, with
the competition offering an accessible creative opportunity for young people to engage with
local history, community storytelling, and photography.
Entries open today, the 4 th of February 2026 and close on 30 th April 2026, with winners
announced on 20 May 2026, the official 175th anniversary date of Durham Markets
Company.
