Durham will be flying the flag for independent traders on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th July as part of Independents’ Day UK – a nationwide initiative that celebrates and promotes the UK’s independent retail and small business sector.
The two-day national event, supported locally by Durham Markets, will highlight the
vital role independent businesses play in keeping town and city centres vibrant,
resilient, and unique.
On Saturday, 5th July, Durham City Centre will come alive with a bustling outdoor
market, featuring around 40 local traders selling a wide range of products, including
handmade gifts, homewares, fashion, food, and photography. Alongside, Durham
Market Hall will be packed with even more independent businesses – from vintage
toys and records to crafts, books, and services – making it the perfect weekend to
shop small and discover something truly different.
To mark the occasion, live entertainment will be available throughout the day, adding
to the celebratory atmosphere and encouraging shoppers to make a day of it.
James Wilson, Market Manager at Durham Markets, said:
“Independents’ Day UK is a great reminder of just how important small, independent
businesses are to our local economy and our communities. By supporting your local
traders, you're not just getting something unique – you're helping to bring the heart
back into our town and city centres. We’re proud to be taking part and hope people
will come out and enjoy everything our traders have to offer.”
The national campaign, run by Independents’ Day UK, encourages people to shop
independent all year round, with the 4th and 5th of July providing a focal point to
raise awareness and show support.
