Celebrating Another Year of GCSE Success at New College Durham

New College Durham (NCD) is absolutely thrilled to celebrate yet another year of fantastic GCSE achievements! With some incredible results, students have truly showcased their talent, resilience, and dedication to success.

It’s been a busy year for the college, with over 1,200 students sitting their maths and English exams. Of these students, the college was delighted to share the news that an incredible 97% passed GCSE maths and 98% passed GCSE English. Among those studying maths, a remarkable 24% achieved high grades – a significant improvement from 10% in high grade rate from 2023/24. For those studying English, 39% achieved a high grade, continuing from last year’s excellent performance.

Alison Maynard, Deputy Principal of New College Durham, shared her excitement, saying:

“We are over the moon with this year’s GCSE results! Despite the challenges that students continue to face across the region, our learners have shown a tremendous work-ethic and determination to succeed. These results are a true reflection of both their hard work and the fantastic support they receive from our amazing staff.”

This year, we also celebrated individual student successes for New College Durham, with one student achieving a highly-coveted Grade 9 in GCSE English. Additionally, two students secured Grade 8s in maths and English, while 18 students achieved Grade 6 and above.

Across the 2024/25 academic year, 497 students took GCSE English and 722 took GCSE maths at NCD. Out of the 1,219 students entered, 1,190 passed their exams, with 368 achieving high grades – that’s an impressive overall pass rate of 98.4%, with 30% of students achieving top grades. Alison added:

“We couldn’t be prouder of our students! Their success not only highlights their commitment but also the dedication of our teachers in supporting all students to reach their full potential.” With national pass rates continuing to decline in many areas, Alison had some reassuring words for those still exploring their options: “If you didn’t achieve the results you hoped for, don’t worry – we’re here to help! Please get in touch with us to discover the various opportunities available. Remember, your exam results don’t define you – they are just one part of your exciting journey towards success.”
