A young woman has died following a suspected hit-and-run incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, October 26 on the A167 in Nevilles Cross. The road was closed for most of the early hours of Sunday morning as investigation work was carried out. A man has been arrested and the car has been found.
The collision took place just before 2 a.m. on the A167 at the Nevilles Cross junction in Durham. A 22-year-old woman, who was on foot, was involved in a crash with a car that failed to stop at the scene. She sustained serious head and chest injuries and was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle, but tragically passed away shortly afterward.
The vehicle involved, reported to be a silver VW Golf GTi Clubsport, has since been located by authorities.
Police have made several arrests following the fatal crash.
A 37-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle while unfit. Additionally, three other individuals—two men, both aged 38, and a 59-year-old woman—have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All four individuals are currently being held in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Mel Sutherland of Durham Constabulary acknowledged the community support and urged anyone with information to contact the police, saying, "Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family at this extremely sad time, and we will continue to support them with our specially trained officers.”
The junction was closed overnight as numerous police vehicles and ambulance teams attended the scene. Reports indicate that a police helicopter also circled the area for about 30 minutes following the incident.
The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they were called at 1:54 a.m. to the collision involving a pedestrian at the junction of Newcastle Road and Darlington Road. They dispatched multiple crews and a medical team to treat the patient before taking her to the RVI.
Local residents recounted seeing the emergency services arrive. One Durham University student of the same age as the victim, living at Nevilles Cross, stated to The Northern Echo newspaper she "saw the police cars and ambulance but had no idea what was going on.” Another resident noted that crashes "happen a lot at this junction."
Durham Police is asking anyone with further information to call 101 and quote incident number 41 of October 26.
