Ushaw Historic House, Chapels and Gardens is to host a three-day floral celebration near Durham.
The Ushaw Flower Festival promises to be a stunning event as the historic 200-year-old Georgian house and Victorian Gothic chapels are transformed into a captivating floral walking tour, showcasing an array of beautiful blooms and intricate displays. Attendees can expect a vibrant atmosphere that highlights both the artistic interpretation of flowers and the rich heritage of the venue, making it a must-visit experience for nature and history enthusiasts alike.
A dedicated team of almost 100 volunteers, including professional florists, flower arrangers, community groups, and individuals will combine their creative skills, making Ushaw Flower Festival 2024 one to remember. With more than 30 bespoke flower arrangements and installations to go on show in Ushaw’s historic buildings from 6-8 September.
Alongside the Flower Festival, we are also hosting a craft and flower market in our stunning Refectory. With over 25 stalls from the local area selling their fantastic array of hand made and quality items, there is bound to be something to tempt you.
What would be your moment in time?
The arrangements on display show imaginative and moving interpretations on the theme of A moment in time - some deeply personal, such as a cherished childhood memory that evokes feelings of nostalgia and connection to one's past; or some that resonate on a larger scale, such as the communal experience of witnessing England's World Cup victory, which unites a nation in pride and celebration. Other arrangements reflect on pivotal moments in history, such as the discovery of DNA, which has transformed our understanding of life and genetics globally and the Battle of Britain. Each type of memory carries its own significance, shaped by emotional depth, cultural impact, and the shared human experience.
Some of the volunteer arrangers for this year’s Flower Festival include:
● Gone but not forgotten - a florist’s dedication to her parents who died from Covid and a memorial for all those who lost family members during the pandemic.
● Your Moment in Time - step behind the floral selfie frame and record your moment at Ushaw Flower Festival.
● Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late! - Inspired by the White Rabbit from Alice through the Looking Glass.
New for this year’s Flower Festival, is a chance to experience the wondrous arrangements under the lights during the evenings of Friday 6 and Saturday 7 September, as Ushaw’s doors will be open from 5pm – 8pm. On these evenings, visitors can enjoy entry to our bar, with a selection of mezé treats available for purchase and live music.
Ady Davis, festival coordinator, said:
“Ushaw is delighted to open its doors and show off its fantastic architecture alongside the talent of local flower arrangers, florists, students, community groups and gifted individuals. We have some large installations this year, alongside a great array of individual arrangements. Some of it will make you think, some of it may make you cry and some of it will bring back memories and make you smile. Our flower and craft market will also mean it will be hard to go home empty handed!”
