At around 12:30pm this afternoon police were called to the North Road area of Durham City after reports of what seems to be an underground explosion.
Reports are saying that pavements were damaged during the incident but no injuries have been reported.
A cordon currently remains in place between Framwellgate Bridge area and North Road and the public are being advised to avoid the area at present.
Officers and firefighters from County Durham & Darlington fire & rescue service currently remain at the scene to make sure the area is made safe.
