Durham University students and community volunteers will celebrate the spectacular Indian festival of Diwali at Durham University’s Oriental Museum on Saturday 2 November, 6 – 8pm.
Visitors will be able to enjoy a varied range of themed activities, including fun crafts in the galleries, traditional prayers said to the goddess Lakshmi, and a colourful Bollywood dance performance, as well as live music, delicious Indian snacks and more.
Diwali is the Indian festival of lights and is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists. It marks the victory of good over evil and hope over despair.
Adithi Avadhani, President of Durham University Hindu Society which is collaborating with the Oriental Museum to host the event, said: “We are excited to welcome visitors to this Diwali event. Sharing food, prayers and enjoying music are important ways of marking the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. It is a great opportunity for us to wish everyone a very happy Diwali.”
Charlotte Spink, Learning Coordinator at the Oriental Museum, said: “Diwali is one of the highlights of the year for the Oriental Museum. As the dark nights start to draw in, it’s wonderful to bring everyone together for an evening of light and family-friendly celebration.”
Everyone is welcome to enjoy this event. Tickets are priced £3 for adults and children. Children under 5 are free of charge.
Tickets for the event must be booked in advance, and to ensure smooth service visitors will be asked to choose a food slot when they book.
