Ex-Durham OnAir Radio presenter Vicky Hawkesworth has today been announced as taking over the afternoon slot on BBC Radio 1.
Vicky, originally from Bolton, will present the new afternoon show on BBC Radio 1, alongside Dean McCullough. The pair are replacing Scott Mills, who leaves Radio 1 ,after 24 years, to take over Steve Wrights BBC Radio 2 programme in September.
Vicky has presented a range of programmes across BBC Radio, including BBC Radio Manchester, since she joined the corporation as part of a Radio 1 take over during Christmas 2020, and has recently covered a number of programmes across the station's schedule.
Vicky was part of the Durham OnAir launch line up, hosting Saturday and Sunday afternoons on the station from November 2020 until late 2021. She had also worked at Gaydio in Manchester.
The new show will come from Media City in Salford Keys, as part of the corporations move to use more regional centers for national programmes.
Speaking to Scott Mills on BBC Radio 1 earlier, Vicky said "It seems sort of not real. I actually thought maybe I was making it up, maybe I dreamt it...I am quite literally about to live my dream and I can't wait to get going."
Sam Lupton, director of Durham OnAir said "This news was not a shock in any way what so ever. Vicky is an incredibly talented presenter and lovely person. Her work at Durham OnAir brought so much value to a brand new radio station. We're so excited that she now gets the opportunity to entertain the whole country on radio 1".
The new afternoon show begins on BBC Radio 1 later in the year.
