Durham University is once again hosting the Celebrate Science Festival at Palace Green from Tuesday 25 October to Thursday 27 October 2022.
The three-day event will be held from 10am until 4pm each day celebrating Durham’s world-leading- and cutting-edge research with the local community.
The event will bring together a wide range of fun packed science-themed activities for the whole family including children’s craft and science activities across three days, completely free of charge.
Children will be invited to create inventions and take part in hands-on activities including investigations of animal skulls, magnetism, and optical illusions, with university experts on hand to answer any queries.
There will also be a range of free activities taking place across Durham University’s visitor attractions including the Palace Green Library and Oriental Museum throughout the festival and half term week.
The festival will host the Little Dragons sessions on Wednesday 26 October from 10am to 11am at Oriental Museum, which will include songs, story time, crafts, role-play, gallery hunts and object exploration for under 5s.
Later in the day from 1pm to 3pm, also at Oriental Museum, Celebrate Science sessions will take place that are suitable for families and children aged 5 to 11 years.
Looking ahead of the festival Dr Pete Edwards, Director of Science Outreach and Engagement, said: “After a two year break Celebrate Science is back live for 2022! We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone back.
“Celebrate Science is an opportunity for young people to see first-hand the inspiring science we do at Durham University and realise that science is not just about being a teacher or a dentist – there are many careers that scientists have and one of those could be for them.”
This year, there will be representation from departments across the University and external partners including Procter & Gamble, Beamish, and Locomotion.
Each year during the local school’s October half-term holiday, the Celebrate Science Festival brings more than 200 staff and student volunteers from departments across the University to engage and inspire young people.
