Durham Police have said they are having technical issues with their 101 and 999 phone service, and have urged people to only call 999 in a genuine emergency.
At around 9:45pm, Durham Constabulary posted the following message onto their Facebook page:
"We are currently experiencing technical issues with our 101 and 999 phone lines.
We would therefore ask that you only call 999 in an emergency while our engineers work to rectify the issue.
If your call is not urgent, please consider whether you need to call us at this time, or search the Advice Centre on our website to see if your question is answered here: www.durham.police.uk/Advice-Centre/Advice-Centre.aspx
Alternatively, non-urgent reports can be made via our 101 Live Chat here: https://bit.ly/3Pq6I0u
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you all for your cooperation."
People commented on the post, generally showing support and sending well wishes to the police force. Maria Lavelle wrote on Facebook "This isn't the emergency services fault in any way, shape or form but can you imagine calling 999 in this day and age and not being able to find help at the end of the phone due to 'technical difficulties "
